[Steve's been playing 'let's catch up on seventy years of history' again, slightly augmented by that trip to Risa. By which we mean, he got to experience technology in the future. But here he is, settled down with a pile of books and looking just a tad disconsolate.]

I know it's 2012. I really do. But even here, I -- feel like I'm gonna have to turn on a radio and wait for it to warm up. Or like I could pick up a newspaper and check the next time the Dodgers are gonna play down at Ebbets. Just -- it's enough to know that what we fought for was worth it, but I've been looking at the library again; and it's ....

Let's just say this isn't the future I expected. Kinda figured -- well, hoped -- we'd get over setting differences on people because of the color of their skin, or where they're from, or because of something they can't do a damn thing about. I guess it was too much to hope for, even seventy years later. Sometimes I think that everything's changed, then I realize some things haven't, and I -- don't know how to help it. Wish I could.

It's 2010 for me, son.

And like I was telling your inmate, people are dumb, panicky animals. People as a group, that is. But you take a person, one single person, and you have something you can change and make a difference.

Don't worry about all that stuff you're readin'. It's about people. They don't have much about everyday guys like cops or soldiers or waitresses or anyone else in those things- just famous types that screwed up and are one in a million.

We're a far stretch better than we were. Not perfect, but we gotta work at it.

Well, things admittedly might be a little different, but here it goes-

[And he gives him a history lesson. About what was on TV at the time, about the cars that came out, and jargon people used. About the things that were bad, and the people that he knew had it hard when it was bad.

Even about aliens that came and didn't know better than to pretend to be stereotypes, and how some still do it when they're mocking humans.

But then there's things like the pretty secretary with the great smile he knew that is next in line to become the head of everything, because she's that damn smart. About his partner, who is an inner city kid with no father that was a respectable cop long before he was his partner.

About the kids of some of the guys that fought overseas that managed to get rid of the draft, because they didn't want to fight wars that they didn't believe in. And about how other people that weren't allowed the option were given it.

All in all, Steve probably gets more of hunk of words out Kay than he usually gives at once.]

Don't worry too much. There's a lot of normal people like me out there willing to give up everything for a better future. Even if it's a little bit at a time.

I work with aliens, I speak over a hundred languages to some extent or another, I have galactic coordinates memorized, and I never graduated high school.

[He doesn't feel too bad in revealing that piece of personal info, either, since a flood coaxed it out of him before.]

I fight 'em, too. But hell knows I prefer workin' with people more. I get so damn tired of the dick-waving contest half this shit turns into.

[Sorry, Steve. Kay still swears up a storm, but he's still mostly got good thoughts about working with people.]

Not yet.

I kinda got a bad history with people that try to take over the Earth, and since his warden is a stand-up sorta lady I didn't want to say anything that might complicate things for her.

You know 'im pretty well?
